Calcium Silicate Insulation Boards — Sourced from China by ThermalEast

Microporous calcium silicate insulation boards for steam pipe, boiler, and industrial oven insulation (200–1050°C). ThermalEast sources METHERM CS-650/CS-1050/MD and other Chinese-manufactured calcium silicate for global buyers.

Why Calcium Silicate Board

Calcium silicate insulation board is manufactured through an autoclave hydrothermal synthesis that reacts silica (SiO₂) and lime (CaO) under steam pressure to form a crystalline xonotlite (Ca₆Si₆O₁₇(OH)₂) mineral matrix. This interlocking crystal network is the source of calcium silicate's key engineering properties: a rigid, load-bearing structure with a fine, controlled pore architecture that delivers thermal resistance across a wide temperature range.

The structural consequence of the xonotlite microstructure is moisture tolerance that sets calcium silicate apart from fibrous competitors. Where mineral wool loses 30–60% of its insulation value when wet, and glass wool degrades even faster, calcium silicate boards retain structural and thermal integrity through condensation cycles, water ingress during plant shutdowns, and re-wetting during maintenance. Boards that absorb moisture can be re-dried before reinstallation without permanent performance loss — a meaningful operational advantage in steam pipe and boiler environments where incidental water contact is routine.

Beyond moisture tolerance, the rigid board format offers advantages that blanket insulation cannot match. Calcium silicate boards can be sawn, drilled, and shaped on-site using standard woodworking tools, eliminating slumping and settling over time. They maintain compressive integrity under mechanical loads at elevated service temperatures. Unlike mineral wool, which settles progressively above 400°C in vibration-prone environments, or glass wool — typically limited to 300–400°C — calcium silicate grades cover service temperatures from 200°C to 1050°C with dimensional stability maintained through repeated thermal cycling. This combination of rigidity, machinability, moisture tolerance, and high-temperature durability makes calcium silicate the specification-grade insulation for industrial steam systems, boilers, furnace backup, and process plant applications where long service life and minimal maintenance intervention are commercial priorities.

Service Temperature Grades

The METHERM range sourced by ThermalEast covers three distinct grades, each addressing a different segment of the industrial insulation market. Spec values below are taken verbatim from manufacturer data sheets.

GradeMax Service TempTypical λ @ 200°CDensity (kg/m³)
METHERM CS 650650°C0.07–0.12 W/(m·K)150–300
METHERM CS 10501050°C0.10–0.16 W/(m·K)200–950

The CS 650 microporous grade delivers lower thermal conductivity than the standard CS 1050 at equivalent service temperatures, because the fine pore structure of the xonotlite crystal network suppresses gas-phase conduction within the board. This translates directly to thinner insulation sections for the same heat-loss target — typically 20–40% thinner than standard calcium silicate at a 200°C mean temperature. For large steam pipe runs or boiler surfaces where insulation thickness drives installation cost, this performance advantage is commercially significant.

What ThermalEast Sources

ThermalEast sources the following METHERM calcium silicate products from the Henan Minmetals East manufacturing facility for international buyers:

  • METHERM CS 650 — standard microporous calcium silicate board for 200–650°C service, the primary specification for steam pipe lagging, boiler jacketing, and industrial oven insulation where energy efficiency is the primary design driver
  • METHERM CS 1050 — high-temperature microporous calcium silicate board for service to 1050°C, used as backup insulation in industrial furnaces, kiln linings, and high-temperature petrochemical process equipment
  • METHERM MD — multi-component composite silicate board combining a calcium silicate core with additional layers or facings for applications requiring insulation, surface protection, or architectural finish in a single board — used in structural steelwork fire protection, fire door cores, and complex geometry industrial insulation

All three products are non-combustible Class A, asbestos-free, and CFC/HCFC-free. Standard board formats ship FOB Shanghai in FCL and LCL quantities.

Typical Applications

Calcium silicate boards sourced through ThermalEast are deployed across the following application categories:

  • Steam pipe lagging — rigid board or pre-formed pipe-cover segments on industrial and district heating steam mains, headers, and valve manifolds
  • Boiler jacketing — shell insulation on industrial and power generation boilers, steam drums, mud drums, and economiser casings
  • Industrial oven and dryer insulation — wall, roof, and door panels in paint baking ovens, curing ovens, and process dryers to 650°C
  • Process plant pipe and equipment insulation — hot oil systems, heat recovery exchangers, distillation column lines, and vessel nozzle areas in chemical and refining plants
  • Furnace and kiln backup insulation — rigid board fitted behind hot-face refractories or ceramic fibre modules in steel, aluminium, glass, and ceramics furnaces to 1050°C
  • Pipe-section insulation — pre-formed half-round or segment sections for rapid installation on standard pipe diameters

How to Specify

Procurement engineers sourcing calcium silicate board should confirm the following parameters before requesting pricing:

  1. Peak operating temperature — determines grade selection: CS 650 for applications to 650°C, CS 1050 for applications to 1050°C
  2. Mean operating temperature — the mean temperature across the insulation thickness governs the applicable thermal conductivity value (λ) for insulation thickness calculations; specify this separately from peak surface temperature
  3. Density requirement — within each grade, multiple density sub-grades are available; higher-density boards offer greater compressive strength and surface hardness at the cost of increased thermal mass and weight; specify if the board must carry mechanical loads
  4. Geometry — flat board or pre-formed pipe section — standard supply is flat board in 600 × 600 mm and 1000 × 500 mm formats, 25–100 mm thickness; pipe-cover segments are available on enquiry for container-quantity orders
  5. Standard reference — ASTM C533 (Type I for 650°C, Type II for 1000°C) is commonly cited in international tender documents; EN 13171 is the European reference; confirm which standard the project specification requires
  6. Volume and lead time — minimum order quantities apply; for large project volumes, early engagement allows production scheduling and shipment planning
