Microporous Insulation Panels — Sourced from China by ThermalEast
Microporous insulation boards for industrial furnaces (700–1100°C). Knudsen-effect thermal performance, thermal conductivity below still air. ThermalEast sources METHERM and other Chinese-manufactured microporous panels for global B2B buyers.
Why Microporous Insulation
Microporous insulation panels achieve thermal conductivity values that no conventional insulation material can match at atmospheric pressure. The mechanism is the Knudsen effect: the fumed silica (SiO₂) matrix in a microporous panel is engineered so that its mean pore size — approximately 70 nm — falls below the mean free path of air molecules at atmospheric pressure. When pore size drops below this threshold, gas-phase conductive heat transfer is suppressed because air molecules cannot complete a free-path collision cycle within the pore. The result is thermal conductivity that is lower than still air itself.
Still air conducts heat at 0.026 W/(m·K) at 20°C. METHERM Microporous M 1000 achieves 0.020 W/(m·K) at 20°C — measurably below still air — without any vacuum. This performance is compounded by opacifiers, typically silicon carbide (SiC) or titanium dioxide (TiO₂), blended into the silica matrix to suppress infrared radiative heat transfer at elevated temperatures. Glass or ceramic fibres provide structural integrity.
The practical consequence for furnace engineers is dramatic thickness reduction. A 40 mm microporous panel can replace 150–200 mm of mineral wool at equivalent thermal resistance. Calcium silicate boards achieve 0.10–0.16 W/(m·K) at 200°C; mineral wool at 400°C typically runs 0.10–0.14 W/(m·K). Unlike those materials, microporous insulation maintains a near-flat conductivity curve as temperature rises — at 800°C, M 1000 still achieves 0.033 W/(m·K), while mineral wool conductivity at that temperature has doubled or tripled. This flat-lambda characteristic is the engineering basis for the space and weight savings achievable in high-temperature furnace backup insulation.

What ThermalEast Sources
ThermalEast sources the following METHERM microporous insulation grades for international B2B buyers:
- METHERM Microporous M 1000 — standard-specification grade for industrial furnace applications to 1000°C; baseline choice for most steel, aluminium, and ceramic furnace backup insulation projects
- METHERM Microporous M 1000 Max — high-strength grade with increased fibre loading (flexural 0.13 MPa) for kiln car decks, vibration-exposed structures, and installations requiring multiple handling steps
- METHERM Microporous M 1100 — extended temperature grade for hot-face applications to 1100°C, specified for aluminium melting furnaces, ceramic sintering kilns, and steel industry applications where temperatures transiently exceed 1000°C
- METHERM MD — density-optimized grade for weight-sensitive installations, including marine vessel insulation and mobile industrial equipment where panel mass is a design constraint
All grades are non-combustible Class A1, asbestos-free, CFC-free, and can be sawn, drilled, and shaped on site using standard woodworking or masonry tools — unlike vacuum insulation panels, which cannot be field-cut. Standard panel format is typically 1000 × 500 mm; thickness range is 5 to 25 mm standard, with 30–50 mm available on indent. Custom cut-to-size is available for container-quantity orders.
Typical Applications
Microporous insulation panels sourced by ThermalEast serve the following end-use segments:
- Industrial furnaces — backup insulation in steel continuous reheating furnaces, walking beam furnaces, aluminium smelting and holding furnaces, ceramic sintering kilns, and glass lehrs; replaces thick mineral wool backup layers in both new build and retrofit projects
- VIP (vacuum insulation panel) core material — fumed silica microporous core used inside evacuated panels for cold-side ultra-low-λ insulation in building envelope and refrigeration applications
- Aerospace ground support equipment — thermal management linings for test cell facilities, engine run-up bays, and elevated-temperature ground support structures where thin-profile insulation is critical
- Fire-rated construction — non-combustible Class A1 panels used in passive fire protection assemblies, fire-rated door cores, and structural steel fireproofing where minimal insulation thickness is required alongside fire resistance
How to Specify
To obtain a sourcing quotation or technical data sheet from ThermalEast, buyers should supply the following information:
- Peak service temperature — the maximum temperature at the hot face of the insulation layer; determines whether M 1000 (to 1000°C), M 1000 Max (to 1000°C), or M 1100 (to 1100°C) is appropriate, or whether MD grade is required for weight-sensitive applications
- λ requirement at mean operating temperature — the target thermal conductivity at the mean panel temperature, used to calculate required panel thickness for a given heat flux or surface temperature specification
- Panel thickness available — the available installation depth; standard stocked thicknesses are 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 mm; thicker panels are available on indent orders
- Required certifications — confirm asbestos-free declaration (standard for all METHERM grades), fire classification (Class A1 for all grades), and any additional compliance documents required by the project specification or importing jurisdiction
- Volume and project deadline — estimated panel quantity (m² or number of boards) and required delivery date; this determines whether FCL (full container load) or LCL (less than container load) shipment applies and informs lead time
ThermalEast does not hold inventory. All orders are sourced directly from the manufacturer and shipped FOB Shanghai or as otherwise agreed. Sample panels for testing and qualification are available through the inquiry form.
